What do you pay for Laundry Detergent?

Thursday, September 10, 2009
I am SO excited about this post!  As I have told you before, my target price for laundry detergent is $2 or less a bottle.  I had heard that there were homemade recipes out there for laundry detergent, but I was skeptical.  I have a friend, Jaimie, that has been using a homemade recipe for awhile, and she loves it.  It comes out to about $.04 per load.  I love this for 2 reasons - First the price can't be beat!  Second, it would be much easier to store a 5 gallon bucket rather than 20 bottles of laundry detergent!  Too bad I didn't get this recipe before I bought 18 bottles of Purex last week!
Want the recipe?  Here it is!

Laundry Detergent

*All ingredients can be found at Kroger

Melt 1 bar Fels Naptha Soap shavings into 4 cups of water in a saucepan on the stove.  Do not actually boil it. Stir well

Add the melted mixture to 3 gallons of HOT tap water in a 5 gallon bucket

Stir in 1Cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda

Stir in 1 Cup of 20 Mule Team Borax

Optional: Stir in a swirl of Dawn

Let sit w/lid on bucket for 24 hours

Stir after 24 hours to break up the solid

*This detergent works great! However it is a lumpy- gel consistency and needs to be stirred now and then.

Use 1 Cup to a large load of Laundry.

That sounds really cool I wonder if it is okay to use on sensitive skin?? If so I might be getting creative!!

I will ask her. I also had someone ask if it faded clothes. I know Jaimie has used it for at least 7+ months, and she loves it!!! I don't know if anyone in her family has sensitive skin. I will find out.

I think I'll try it (partly because I happen to have a 5+ gallon bucket sitting around!)
